Study Permit refusals have increased

According to the official data by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), almost 39% of applications for study permits between January and May 2019 were refused. When it comes to undergraduate students, the refusal rate was even higher reaching 53% of applications. The lowest refusal rates were for applicants enrolled in Ph.D. programs (11%), primary school (20%), high school (20%), master’s programs (31%) or English/French language programs (31%). The general trend is the increase of study permit refusals. In 2014, IRCC refused only 28% of study permit applications, while in 2018 the number increased to 34%. The total number of international students in 2018 was above 340,000.
