Study in Canada

Student Immigration to Canada

The quality of higher education in Canada attracts students from all over the world. Moreover, it is one of the certain ways to become a Canadian Permanent Resident. Immigration via education is not a quick procedure and consists of certain stages. In this article, we will talk in detail about every stage of this immigration path.

Study Permit

After the approval decision to enroll you in an accredited Canadian university or college, you must obtain a study permit. A study permit is a specific document given by the IRCC to foreign nationals who are aiming to study in Canada. However, to visit Canada you may need both documents: a study permit and a visitor visa (or an electronic travel authorization if you are from a visa-exempt country). Usually, the length of the study permit is equal to the length of your academic program, plus an additional 90 days.

Bring your family with you

It is worth noting that an international student has the opportunity to bring his/her spouse and children to Canada for the entire period of a study permit validity! Thus, while one family member is studying, another has the right to apply for an open work permit, and be legally working and supporting the family. Besides, a gained work experience will be credited in the future when your family will apply for a Permanent Residency in Canada. In addition, dependent children can study for free as long as a study permit of the main applicant is approved.

Post Graduation Work Permit Program

Another advantage of being a student in Canada is a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). PGWP is a federal program that allows international students to stay legally in Canada after graduation and gain experience in the Canadian labour market. For international students, this program is a direct pathway for the transition from temporary resident status to permanent residency. The duration of PGWP is equal to the duration of the study program or more, but up to three years.

Express Entry: Canadian Experience Class.

PGWP will give you an opportunity to earn Canadian Work Experience in a skilled or semi-skilled occupation. When it is one year and more – you become eligible to apply for the Canadian Experience Class program, or you may use one of the multiple Provincial Nominee Programs. Finally, you are close to getting the status of a Canadian Permanent Resident. And that will be the final point of the immigration procedure for international students.

As we can see the whole procedure of Student immigration is not easy and fast. Anyway, this method is one of the most guaranteed. After you pass all the stages, you get Canadian education, work experience and necessary skills for an adapted life in Canada.
