Trudeau’s immigration reduction promises fall short

Despite Prime Minister Trudeau’s promises to significantly reduce immigration and “pause population growth,” a recent Desjardins report indicates that Canada’s population growth remains high. While international student admissions have decreased, the intake of temporary foreign workers and permanent immigrants has remained relatively stable. The report casts doubt on the government’s ability to meet its lower immigration targets without more aggressive reductions, especially given past failures to achieve policy objectives. Population growth has surged in recent years, straining affordability and social cohesion. Although the government aims for population decreases in 2025, 2026 and 2027, the current data suggests they are far from achieving this goal. The government’s success has been limited to reducing international student intake, while other areas remain unchanged. The report highlights a significant increase in asylum claims, further complicating efforts to control population growth.
