Open Work Permit for those who are abused

On May 31, 2019, IRCC published a news release introducing new measures for vulnerable individuals. Beginning June 4, 2019, employer-specific work permit holders who find themselves in a difficult situation in Canada will be able to apply for open work permits, which will allow them to find another job in the country. Beginning July 26, 2019, newcomers who experience family violence will be able to apply for a fee-exempt temporary resident permit that will give them legal immigration status and includes a work permit and health care coverage. On September 9, 2019, IRCC plans to launch a 2-year pilot project where a person (resettled refugee, who received asylum in Canada or was sponsored as a spouse, partner or dependent child) who came to Canada can now sponsor undeclared immediate family members.
